We Love Bringing Sydney’s Old Terraces Back to Life
There is something special about Sydney’s terrace houses.
Whether it’s the decorative brickwork, original timber staircases, high ceilings or the character that has developed over more than 100 years, these homes tell a story. At Gleeson Build, we believe that story should be preserved while creating a home that works for modern family living.
We enjoy the challenge of renovating heritage terraces—retaining the original character of the building while completely transforming the way the home feels inside.
Respecting the Past While Building for the Future
Many older terraces throughout Paddington, Surry Hills, Redfern, Alexandria and St Peters were designed for a very different lifestyle. Rooms can feel dark, narrow and disconnected, with limited storage and little natural light.
Our approach is to carefully preserve the heritage features that give these homes their charm while opening up the rear of the property and redesigning the interior to create bright, functional living spaces.
Where approvals allow, we can also create valuable additional living space by converting the roof area into a new level. Dormer additions and attic conversions are an excellent way to increase space without sacrificing the footprint of the home, making them ideal for growing families wanting an extra bedroom, bathroom, office or parents’ retreat.
Opening Up a Terrace
One of the most rewarding parts of a terrace renovation is seeing the transformation during construction.
Removing the existing roof structure, introducing new structural steel and rebuilding the upper level completely changes what is possible within these homes. While it may look dramatic during construction, careful planning and quality workmanship ensure the finished home feels like it has always belonged there.
Our Paddington terrace project is a great example of this process. During construction you can clearly see how the roof is opened to create additional space before the new structure and finishes come together.

Heritage Renovations Require Experience
Working on older homes is very different from building a new house.
Every project presents unique challenges — from ageing timber framing and uneven floors to restricted access and heritage requirements. Successful renovations require careful planning, experienced trades and attention to detail throughout every stage of construction.
Our team works closely with clients, architects and consultants to deliver renovations that respect the home’s history while improving comfort, functionality and long-term value.
Inner Sydney Terrace Renovation Specialists
We enjoy working throughout Sydney’s established inner suburbs, including:
- Paddington
- Surry Hills
- St Peters
- Redfern
- Alexandria
- Erskineville
- Newtown
- Darlinghurst
These suburbs are filled with beautiful character homes that deserve thoughtful renovations rather than complete replacement.
